DOESN’T EVERYONE DO PRIVATE MARTIAL ARTS LESSONS?
YES….and….not necessarily….Most any school will provide private lessons. However, they are often seen as a nuisance or are priced at a very high rate due to the value of the instructors time. Very rarely will you find a structure in which your learning is designed with private martial arts instruction in mind. (For example, at our studio, if a student merely wants to have a private lesson for an hour the standard rate is $175.00 for that hour of time. Student’s in a Private Lesson Membership Program receives all of the group classes that accompany their rank as well as the private lessons necessary at that rank within their tuition payment.)
Before I begin I want to state that there are plenty of schools with excellent instruction that follow the formula that I am about to describe. It says nothing about the art they teach or the quality of those teaching. This is about our perspectives on effective learning, your best benefit for your money, as well as what we know is almost necessary for effective training.
MARTIAL ARTS LESSONS – What Usually Happens
Most often students are taught martial arts in a group environment. This means that you must learn your techniques from each class you are in. Putting the obligation on you the student to pull the details from what the instructor says and visually from your fellow students.
Unfortunately this creates many pitfalls for you the prospective martial artist. Are you an auditory learner? No? Well let’s hope that the person you happen to be looking at when you are working on new techniques (which will be weekly) is a long time black belt.
Forgot to mention….the Black Belt students are at the front of the class while you are sitting at the back. Traditionally schools line up by rank placing the highest ranking toward the front and reducing rank as the line moves back. This is a fine way for a student to progress closer to the teacher but as an initial student you will be learning the foundation movements from someone of only slightly higher rank and experience (if not the same rank).
WHY LEARN MARTIAL ARTS THROUGH PRIVATE LESSONS?
The relationship between instructor to student is very important. Learning direct from the instructor gives you the opportunity to receive detailed instruction and correction in an environment that allows you to progress at your own pace. Moving quickly? We will up the speed of your progression. Having trouble? We slow it down and make sure you get it correct.
At times in the “group class only” environment you can be lost in the shuffle. Either too far ahead and thus bored or too far behind and struggling to keep up. Both situation can cause a severe loss in the value of your training time and effort.
At Seattle White Tiger Kung Fu each technique toward every belt level will be taught to you by a full time Instructor. Not from another student or someone who volunteers their time a few hours a week. It is the job of that instructor to make you the best martial artist they can. Every lesson will be tailored specific to your needs, physical limitations, and overall goals increasing your ability to learn. In fact, we can take a dedicated student and make them more proficient and better than a student with equal time at another school in less than half the time!
Private lessons also give you the opportunity to ask questions in a more comfortable environment. It is often difficult to speak up in front of others when you are confused and the time during your private lessons is yours to use for obtaining clarity.
THEN WHAT IS THE POINT OF GROUP CLASSES IF I CAN HAVE PRIVATE LESSONS?
Don’t underestimate the value of group lessons. We train group classes to ensure that there is motivation to continue your training. In fact, each belt level has a minimum number of classes that must be attended prior to a belt test regardless of your completion of the basic knowledge for the test.
The reason for this is that although you may know the information that is on your next test. As a student you have not completed the necessary repetition to make those movements automatic. Group class is the time in which you apply what you learn in your private lessons on people of different shapes and sizes. We run a rotating curriculum in our group classes like every other school so as a new student you will be able to see more advanced techniques and then refine them in your private lessons. It also lets you meet other students that share your similar interest. The more you get to know those you train with the better and more likely you will be at staying true to your commitment to health and longevity through martial arts.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF PRIVATE LESSON PROGRAMS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU?
The only way to truly know if any martial arts school is going to work for you is to go and check them out in person. Investigating online is important but you truly won’t know what works for you unless you take the time to see for yourself.
